Enchane

A portmanteau of "enhance" and "change" - used to pay homage to all of the "image enhance" scenes used in modern TV and Cinema. Refer to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vxq9yj2pVWk for more details.

  • Origin follows discussion of expanding the graph of a complex baseband RF signal:

Broness

Extension of 'bro' that allows for better variable-length pronunciation of the ending 's' sound. Also used to create an abstract noun that represents mutual respect and friendship between the two parties:

  • The suffix -ness is a native English suffix which is attached to adjectives and participles. It is used to form abstract nouns. These abstract nouns express quality or state.
  • The suffix -ness is added to words such as good to get goodness, great (greatness), dark (darkness), kind (kindness), obliging (obligingness), prepared (preparedness), bright (brightness) and busy.

Bor

Intentional mis-spelling of Bro.

RF

  • General since wave

ModeZ

Mode S transponder signals from aircraft, part of the secondary radar surveillance system.

  • Origin: Comes from the original GNUradio project called 'gr-air-modes' that used software-defined radio to decode these pulses. Since we are still unsure if 'modes' is intended to be a plural, we took it upon ourselves to rectify this matter by using a 'z' at the end.

ADS-B Packet Rate

  • "Five pulses per second"
    • Sounds like: SQUIT SQUIT SQUIT (at 5PPS)

Snatching

  • Origin: Bed intruder song.
"Windows Vista's Multimedia Class Scheduler service (MMCSS) is snatching up your network card interrupts."

"Let's head up the hill and snatch some HF with the USRP."

"Bro, I'm outside your apartment, snatching up your RFz!"

USRP

Pronounced 'usurp'. This has many meanings and uses however it primarily stems from our love of Software Radio and Ettus Research's Software Radio device of the same name. Given that Software Radio enables anyone to hack any peice of RF spectrum to their content, it can allow one to receive and decode anything they fancy.

See the classic (pre-Software Radio) dictionary definition of 'usurp'.

Copulator

Goodbye/goodnight.

Often written as:

COP
U
LA
TOR

Steam

GR-Steam

A fork of the GNU Radio source tree that operates purely on steam and mechanical valves for its logic.

"Toot toot!"

Steam CORDIC

This is a steam-driven mechanical implementation of CORDIC (COordinate Rotation DIgital Computer), which is an alternative to the FPGA implementation used for the USRP.

"Chugga-chugga, chugga-chugga"

Roofing filters

A marketing term used to dupe unsuspecting prospective HAM radio buyers into the superiority of a particular brand/model of receiver.

Through recent technological innvoation, it has also been used to convert switch-mode power supplies into linear ones:
